A 'split' class, or a 'multi-grade' class, is where two or more levels are taught together by one teacher (for example, 1st and 2nd class). This means that teaching is focused on group work. The failure of multigrade classes has important consequences: multigrade teaching being perceived as a cut-rate, unsuitable form of delivery, its failure causes families to lose interest in schooling and thus reduces social demand for education. In short, such failures contribute to under-development and poverty.

These resources are user-friendly, interesting, relevant, and keep teacher planning and preparation times reasonable. While these lesson plans were designed specifically for use in multi-grade classrooms on Hutterite Colonies, they can be used by any teacher.

The basic format of the Oka Lesson Plans is consistent throughout: a short, teacher-led introduction followed by independent work for students. All lesson plans establish and address outcomes from the Alberta Programs of Study, with the exceptions of those that conflict with Hutterite traditions, beliefs, and expectations.
